Angoulême & Charente: creativity, vineyards and gentle living in South-West France

Set between the Atlantic coast and the green inland landscapes of Nouvelle-Aquitaine, Angoulême and the Charente offer a wonderfully balanced destination where culture, heritage, river scenery and the French art of living come together naturally. This is a region known for its creative spirit, its historic towns, its vineyard landscapes and its relaxed pace, making it ideal for travelers looking for an authentic and elegant side of South-West France.

Angoulême, the capital of the department, is unlike any other city in France. Famous around the world as the international capital of comic art, it is home to the renowned International Comics Festival, the Cité Internationale de la Bande Dessinée et de l’Image, and a remarkable trail of painted walls that turns the city itself into an open-air gallery. Angoulême is also part of UNESCO’s Creative Cities network, which adds to its strong identity as a city of images, imagination and culture.

Beyond its comic-book fame, Angoulême is also a beautiful hilltop city with a distinctive atmosphere. Its old center, historic ramparts and cultural venues make it a rewarding place to explore on foot, while museums such as the Comics Museum, the Paper Museum and the Musée d’Angoulême reveal different sides of the city’s artistic, industrial and historical heritage. This blend of creativity and heritage gives Angoulême a personality that feels both lively and refined.

Beyond the city, the wider Charente unfolds through rolling countryside, riverside villages, vineyards and quiet roads that invite slow travel. The region is closely linked to Cognac, one of France’s most iconic spirits, and wine tourism is one of the major pleasures of a stay here. The vineyards of the Cognac region extend across the Charentes and are also associated with Pineau des Charentes and Charentais wines, offering visitors a rich world of cellars, estates and tasting experiences.

The Charente is also a lovely destination for outdoor holidays. La Flow Vélo, a 400 km cycle route linking the Dordogne to the Atlantic, passes through Angoulême and follows the Charente valley through peaceful landscapes, vineyards and characterful villages. It is a perfect way to experience the area at a gentle pace, whether for a short ride or a longer touring holiday.

Among the department’s most charming places, Aubeterre-sur-Dronne stands out as one of the Most Beautiful Villages of France. Built above the Dronne River, this lovely village is known for its white-stone houses, winding streets and relaxed southern feel. It adds another layer of charm to the destination and is ideal for a scenic excursion during a stay in Charente.

For LGBTQ+ travelers looking for a destination that feels stylish, peaceful and a little different, Angoulême & Charente are an excellent choice. Whether you are planning a cultural city break, a countryside escape, a wine-focused holiday or a slow journey through South-West France, this destination offers creativity, gastronomy, beautiful landscapes and a real sense of freedom.
