Antwerp and the Flanders Overview

Antwerp (Antwerpen) is located in the Flanders region of Belgium, and is renowned as a port city. The majority language of the city is Flemish (which is a variant of Dutch), although most people you meet do speak English and/or French in addition to Vlaams.

Antwerp is the second biggest city in Belgium and also one of the biggest ports in Europe. As well as being at the forefront of the diamond industry, it's also well known as one of the most up-and-coming fashion design centres in Europe.

Antwerp, the city of famous painter Rubens, has a small quite lively gay scene. The city features on of the most famous gay clubs in the Benelux, Red &Blue. This club near the harbour attracts guys from all over the Benelux. Red &Blue is also responsible for two big annual events: Navigaytion and Studio 54 (in the Sportpaleis)

Unlike many cities Antwerp doesn't have a single "Gay Village", with gay venues being spread throughout the City. One area which was previously the gay centre is around Van Schoonhovenstraat (known locally as "Rue Vaseline"), this still has a number of venues located there
