Boulogne and the cote d'Opale Overview

 

Boulogne sur Mer is quite different from Dunkerque and Calais . It has long been an important harbour and claims to be the largest fishing base in Europe. The city has an attractive medieval quarter : "the ville haute", dominated by a grand, domed cathedral that apes St Paul's in London. the shopping streets of the ville basse offers some of the best food shops in the whole region, along with a large array of fish restaurants.

Visits in Boulogne  :

Maison de la Beuriere - heart of the old seafaring quarter of Boulogne, an authentic fisherman's house built in 1870 with the interior re-constructed so you can see how a sailor's family lived in 1900. Portrays real atmosphere of the old fishing traditions of Boulogne.

The Castle of the Counts of Boulogne built at the beginning of the 13th century.  The castle-museum of Boulogne, in the fortified town, houses the most important exhibition of masks from Alsaka in the world, the second largest collection of greek ceramics in France (after the Louvre), collections of Roman and medieval sculptures, paintings (15th-20th century), an Egyptian collection, African Arts...

The imperial town of Boulogne possesses the tallest column in France (54m) dedicated to Napoleon's Grande Armee. The town was the birthplace of the Legion d'Honneur. Every summer a major historical re-enactment recalls this prestigious period.
