The exhibition tells the story of the Peaceful Revolution and its main participants. In 1989, many East Germans woke from an enforced hypnosis, overcame their fears and took their fate in their own hands.

Beginning with just a few people, opposition activities quickly became a widespread grass roots movement. More and more people resisted despair, hopelessness, decline and stagnation in society, demanding freedom of travel and free elections. Popular movements and parties were established. Hundreds of thousands took bravely to the streets. The Communist rulers were helpless to respond. While a section of the GDR was seeking reform, another section voted with their feet, leaving the country. Together they were able to defeat the dictatorship of the SED, East Germany's ruling party, forcing national politicians to act, and making history. The people developed a new attitude to life. They changed their country and felt it drastically. This exhibition documents this exciting time and invites discussion of the results.
