Montpellier Overview

Montpellier first appeared on the world stage 1,000 years ago, and became attached to the Kingdom of France in 1349. Now, the capital of Languedoc, Montpellier at once seems to look back and ahead while always taking time to enjoy the here and now. The town center is a labyrinth of narrow medieval streets, carved archways, unexpected fountains and tenderly maintained gardens. Farther outside the center, larger, 19th-century monuments dramatically punctuate the graceful cityscape and contrasting here and there, you'll find splendid examples of modern architecture, demonstrating a millennium-long obsession with aesthetics

Le Pavillon du Musee Fabre
Contempory Art Gallery
The crown jewel of provincial museums, the Fabre museum has now reopened its doors to visitors after four years of renovation work to redesign, restore and expand its galleries and other spaces. The buildings that comprise the Fabre museum are of exceptional historical value, even more so now that their original harmony and diversity have finally returned.

The Botanical Garden
The Montpellier Botanical Garden is one of the oldest in Europe. It was created by order of Henri IV in 1593 for Pierre Richer de Belleval (1564- 1632). At the time it served as a model for designing all the botanical gardens in France, including the one in Paris 40 years later.

Les jardins de l'esplanade
From the Place de la Comédie to the Corum, this is a walk shaded by the many plane trees, embellished with pools, fountains, games areas and seats to rest on. On the right is the Champs de Mars, a former military terrain converted into a public garden in 1900. It is very popular with the public.
