The Causses and the Tarn Gorges Vultures nesting in the cliffs of the Gorges soar majestically above the austere beauty of immense limestone plateaus, the Causses. Limestone is also a world of subterranean marvels : the caves of Aven Armand, Dargilan and the abime (abyss) of Bramabiau. Majestic buildings with limestone vaults which have resisted the test of time. The Causses are crowned by sublimely beautiful cornices which plunge towards the green waters of the Tarn and offer innumerable viewpoints from the cliff paths. The ‘Gorges du Tarn’ are one of Europes natural jewels.
Mont Lozère The Mont Lozère is a kingdom of springs, of grasslands and of rocky granitic chaos. This mountain of immense spaces and open landscape is subject to harsh winters during which the ‘bells of torment’ rang, guiding lost souls blinded by the snow to the safety of villages. Farmhouses here are constructed from granite.
The Cévennes Land of hills and valleys. A land of colours. The colours of an ocean of mountains tinted blue by the first light of dawn. Colours of gold when the beech and chestnut trees put on their autumn finery. The purple of the moors of heather. The land of the Camisards can be contemplated from the Corniche des Cévennes to the summit of the Mont Aigoual, a land which became a theatre of battles.
At the heart of the Cévennes National Park The headquarters of the Cévennes National Park is situated at Florac. The objective of the Park is to protect and enhance the exceptional quality of its landscape, the heritage of more than a thousand years of history where the presence of man is at the same time rare and omnipresent.
